The mathematics required as an ancillary subject for courses in Naval Architecture, Electrical, Mechanical and Marine Engineering and Nuclear Science and Technology is given by the department. In addition, instruction in mathematics is given to Communications and Gunnery Officers' courses.

Staff researches include work into the Theory of Functions, History of Mathematics, the Mathematics of Linear Systems and Control, and Elasticity.

The laboratories enable a large range of practical work to be carried out in such topics as corrosion, physical metallurgy and metallography, paints, plastics and explosives. Research work in the department is concerned with stress corrosion and the brittle fracture of steel.
