The department's nuclear reactor Jason was the first to
be installed in any College in Britain. The laboratories are well equipped for
all aspects of nuclear, reactor and health physics. Much of the work of the
department is of a post-graduate nature with research by the staff into such
fields as reactor shielding and instrumentation, health physics, neutron
diffusion, reactor kinetics and systems approach to reactor engineering. The
courses which the department runs are restricted to naval officers, Navy
Department civilian personnel and to employees of firms contracted to the
Ministry of Defence.
Postscript The site in 2017 is managed by the Greenwich
Foundation for the Old Royal Naval College, set up in July 1998 as a registered
charity to "look after these magnificent buildings and their grounds for the
benefit of the nation". The buildings were originally constructed to serve as
the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, now generally known as Greenwich
Hospital, which was designed by Christopher Wren, and built between 1696 and
1712. The hospital closed in 1869. Between 1873 and 1998 it was the Royal Naval
College, Greenwich.
