The love of Lucerne in central Switzerland beganon Saturday 13th August 1960. It was on that dayMargaret & Keith married at Newcastle upon Tyne.At about midnight we boarded a plane to Basleairport. It was with some trepidation as neither ofus had been in an aircraft before. The crossing ofthe Alps was rather bumpy and Margaret sufferedair sickness. Not what was expeced on our firsthoneymoon night. The next stage was on a trainthrough to Lucerne and to hotel Rauthus with aroom overlooking the city to the mountains beyond. The Rigi, Bergenstock and Pilatus peaks provideda panoramic scene for future exploration. In later years we visited Switzerland many timesmostly in the Lake Geneva area. We stayed intents and holiday caravans with the children andlater on our own. On one occasion when campingon the northern shore the Golden Pass train wastaken through the mountains to Lucerne. Sadlythere was little time to explore again as we had tocatch the train back to Lausanne. However, we didpromise ourselves to come back one day.And so we did for our Silver wedding anniversary inAugust 2000. This time we stayed at the more up-market hotel Montana. This was first-class foodand accommodation with a balcony overlooking thelake. We thus had a ring side view of the annual
firework display on the lake. We had a great timeexploring previous locations although walking toofar was painful for Margaret with hip and backproblems. Plans were made to return in 2010 forour Golden Wedding anniversary. Meanwhile ourdesire to return was bolstered by a chance meetingin Cornwall during the summer of 2009.Each weekend we usually go to our caravan atMother Ivey's Bay near Padstow. On arrival wenoticed a car with Swiss number plates. Weintroduced ourselves to sisters Connie and Sandrawith their dog Nina and invited them visit us as theywere leaving on the next day. Apart from being adelightful couple the surprise was that they lived inLucerne and were frequent visitors to hotelMontana. The result was that they planned to stayin our caravan in 2010 and we would visit Lucerne. This had to be put on hold as the problems ofMargaret had deteriorated to the point of needing anew right hip. With a new hip and cherished friends in Lucernewe duly arrived for Keith's birthday and a veryhappy reunion with our new "daughters” Connie &Sandra.
