On the opposite of the road was Johnson's Stores where my mother would take her grocery list and food coupons for the weekly shop. In those days products were weighed and put into brown paper bags. The costs were added to the list, added up mentally, and change counted out. It was not unusual for a queue to form with the opportunity to exchange the Village gossip. A few doors down was the Chapel where I hand-pumped the organ on a Sunday morning and attended bible classes with Mrs Freeland.
